Altamente Unveils Open Source Solutions for Government at FOSE
After nearly a decade helping business compete globally using open source technologies, Altamente announces its new series of solutions designed for government agencies at the Federal Office Systems Expo (FOSE), the nation's largest government technology event to be held March 10-12 in Washington D.C. The change comes on the heels of President Barack Obama's request for a guideline for strategic use of Open Source technologies in government.
While many sources have pointed to the cost savings of using Open Source in government, MITRE's 2004 report and other more recent reports point out that enhanced security was cited as the most common reason for choosing open source deployments in government. "These security concerns are front and center as budgets tighten, in business and in government. Flexible hours, remote offices, and virtual offices surface as cost saving measures," explains James O'Malley, Chief Technology Officer at Altamente.
With the government agencies in mind, Altamente is now offering their Celador and Altabox office network appliances running CentOS, a government approved linux based operating system. Starting at $2,450, the Celador appliance is focused on network security. Altamente's appliances vary in the IT services they provide. These include: virtual private networks, remote laptop conections, web content filtering, Internet use reports, web and email server, spam and virus filtering among others.
